Phantom Creek Estates - Petite Cuvée 2020

With the aim of setting the benchmark in Canadian viticulture and winemaking, Phantom Creek‘s estate vineyards are now in transition to organic and biodynamic farming practices.

Phantom Creek farms three vineyards: Phantom Creek, Becker, and Kobau.

The oldest is Phantom Creek. Established in 1996 by pioneering viticulturist Richard Cleave, Phantom Creek Vineyard is consistently recognized for producing some of the best red wines in Canada. And its tiny acreage is in sharp contrast to its ability to produce powerful, opulent wines. It has full afternoon sun over sandy soils.

Becker was planted in 1977 originally to whites but in 1993 some late-ripening red varieties were introduced. Located on the upper terrace of the Black Sage Bench, the steeply sloped, Southwestern-facing aspect of this vineyard receives afternoon sun, yet a more gradual growing season due to its higher elevation, producing richly concentrated and aromatic wines.

Kobau is located on the Golden Mile Bench, British Columbia’s first official sub-appellation. The unique minerality in the wines grown from this vineyard are due to its complex, gravelly soils paired with early morning sunshine and afternoon shade cast by Mount Kobau.

The care afforded to the land is followed by meticulous attention during the winemaking process: harvesting is done at the block level to ensure the right level of ripeness. Phantom Creek picks earlier than most in order to preserve freshness and achieve balance once the wine is bottled.

Red wines are first hand-sorted, then optically sorted. Fermentation takes place in Rousseau oak casks and small French oak barriques. The whites are pressed whole cluster, wild fermented in custom Stockinger oak casks. At every stage, care is taken to celebrate the fruit, the land, and the graceful integration of all the elements involved in winemaking.
