Pewsey Vale - The Contours Eden Valley Riesling 2016

Pewsey Vale Vineyard‘s love affair with Riesling started in 1847 when it was the first vineyard planted in Eden Valley. A hidden utopia, the family started to reinvigorate Pewsey Vale Vineyard in 1961. The focus fell sharply on the beauty and diversity of Riesling in its many forms. One vineyard. One variety. One vision. This vision has seen Pewsey Vale Vineyard create the most awarded and beloved Rieslings in Australia.

Elevated above the Barossa Valley on undulating land, Eden Valley is situated between 450 and 500 metres above sea level. At this altitude, the cooler temperatures and greater diurnal range allow the grapes to retain their natural acidity, with aromatics and fine flavours slowly developing well into the cool, dry autumn. The soils through Eden Valley are generally shallow, rocky and acidic, in many areas suited only to the grazing of sheep and cattle. There are special pockets with slightly deeper soils and finer rocks, where the vineyards have been planted.

The combination of climate, aspect, soil type and altitude of the vineyard, as well as careful, sustainable viticultural management, provide the perfect foundation to make outstanding Australian Riesling. Louisa Rose, the Chief Winemaker tells us that she doesn’t know the exact reason why Eden Valley is such a good spot for Riesling, only that the consistency from year to year, the soft acidity, the long palate, and beautiful citrus flavours speak for themselves.
