Koerner - La Korse Clare Valley Red 2022

The brothers Jono & Damon Koerner grew up in the Clare Valley, Australia but have since spent time working and studying around Australia and overseas. Their wines are produced from fruit grown within a 500m radius of the Watervale area in the Clare Valley, with the majority coming from the family vineyard, Gullyview. Gullyview vineyard has been owned and managed by their parents, Christine & Anthony Koerner, for over 40 years.

While many producers in the Clare Valley stick to tried-and-true practices, Koerner is not afraid to try new things: Who would have thought of Clare Valley as the home of Sciacarello or Vermentino? And with Koerner it’s not just one Vermentino, but two.

Koerner‘s winemaking philosophy is simple: to make wines that reflect their place in the world, wines that are made in the vineyard. Koerner believes that the date of picking is the most crucial part of the process. Once the grapes make their way to the winery, they are carefully nurtured with each batch treated individually. An understanding of terroir and the individual varieties enables Koerner to produce unique wines using nothing but the grapes and a small amount of sulphur. Koerner are currently implementing organic practices in their vineyards.

Koerner shows that minimal intervention winemaking and daring varietal choices, when done correctly, can produce wines of great quality: In 2019 Koerner won the Young Guns of Wine award (after being finalists in two previous years) over a hugely talented pool of fellow winemakers.
