Stag's Hollow Winery - Dolcetto 2019

Stag’s Hollow is a winery in the Okanagan Falls Sub-Geographical Indication committed to the sustainable production of wines of the highest quality.

Stag’s Hollow was founded by Larry Gerelus and Linda Pruegger in 1992, with an initial planting of Vidal and Chasselas on a 10 acre vineyard. The strong demand on an initial small production led to the growth of the winery, and in 2011 the purchase of their Shuttleworth Creek vineyard. The business was sold in 2019, with the founders retiring in 2021.

Stag’s Hollow uses a unique trellising system, the Geneva Double Curtain. With this system, the canopy is divided into two pendent curtains and trained downwards from high canes. The foliage is trained downwards from these canes, forming the so-called double curtains. This training system was one of the first examples of a divided canopy developed in the New World and, by reducing shade, it increases both yield and grape quality.

Grapes are grown sustainably, with the use of drip irrigation to make efficient use of water, and all canopy management is done by hand, which reduces energy use and allows for more precision in the vineyard. They also grow diverse and natural vegetation buffer zones in order to provide breeding grounds for beneficial insects and to control unwanted populations of pests as part of their organic wine growing practices.

Their main vineyards are Stag’s Hollow and Shuttleworth Creek. Stag’s Hollow is a glacial kettle hole has stony glaciofluvial soils, and its Merlot and Pinot Noir blocks (over 30 years of age) receive a lot of sun, helping the grapes to ripen even in difficult years. Shuttleworth Creek has been planted with Albariño and Tempranillo as well as Dolcetto and Teroldego.
